The American Gem Society (AGS) was founded in 1934 by a small group of leading jewelers including the great grandfather of modern gemology, Robert M. Shipley. Their goal was to create an organization that could help protect the jewelry-buying public from fraud, and false advertising.  Today, we’re proud to say, Shipley’s vision has become a reality. Nearly 3,500 jewelers, retailers, suppliers, individual titleholders and affiliates have joined the American Gem Society and have dedicated themselves to:

          • Consumer protection
          • Ethical business practices
          • Development and maintenance of superior gemological skills and knowledge

      Jewelry Camp (August 2013)

For the jewelry professional, and the passionate collector, jewelry knowledge and education is crucial for success in business because the industry as we know it has changed. Different factors are responsible: technology has reshaped how we advertise and purchase, and fluctuations in the global economy have made precious metal prices soar, among other things. So how does this affect the jewelry collector, buyer, and retailer?

These are the kinds of issues that Jewelry Camp addresses, bringing you the right education for the real world. The combination of knowledge about the current market with the historical context of antique jewelry pieces gives you the requisite edge to compete in today’s Antique, Estate, and Vintage jewelry markets.
